Healing-caring for self and others with authentic transpersonal presence requires a heart-centered openness to a reflective practice; multiple ways of knowing; and a compassionate humanistic, moral-ethical philosophy and practice that honor vulnerability and human dignity. Transpersonal presence transcends ego and fosters an “ethics of face and belonging” (Levinas, 1969). Human experiences, multidimensional and complex, can shape body-mind-social-spirit wholeness and sense of being in relationship with others in positive and negative ways. Often life circumstances around health, social, ethnic, economic, and belief status create a sense of non-belonging and separation for individuals and groups. Feelings and perceptions of vulnerability are often difficult to verbalize and can create barriers to giving and receiving healing-caring. Openness and intentional loving presence to vulnerable persons in our care foster opportunities to transcend barriers and promote a healing transformative opportunity for connectedness, growth, discovery, and increased resiliency. Storytelling/listening and aesthetic ways of knowing expand and humanize our empirical knowing.
