The Merrie Monarch Festival

The Merrie Monarch Festival is an art festival dedicated to King David Kalākaua who contributed to the Hawaiian language, culture, and arts. The festival lasts for a week and takes place in Hawaiian Island Hilo.
The highlight of the festival is The Kumulipo, a recitation of sacred Hawaiian chant about the beginning of the world, and the world that Hawaiian come from. Additionally, there is an interpretation and animation of the first 28 lines of the text made by seniors from one of the High schools on the Island.
Each year, the Merrie Monarch Festival features music, crafts, art, demonstrations, and a hula competition. It is an annual arts festival, which takes place for more than 55 years already.
