Phantasmagorical event is the best way I can describe being present at the Cannabis Hemp Festival. Who would have imagined 20 years ago that we could so openly feature medical doctors, patients, growers, dispensaries, and legislators talking about the benefits of cannabis?  Roger Christie, one intrepid activist, stands out as a chronicle of the past, present, and future destiny of the cannabis movement to make it legal. He said, “My goal remains to return the Cannabis Tree of Life to heal the nations, overcome original sin, and restore Eden. It’s our natural right to have full and free access to this essential resource.   We need a cannabis-based economic engine here. Everything else has failed. In 120 days or less, we, the people, can have a world-famous, multi-million dollar cannabis harvest for health, wealth, happiness, holiness, and sustainability.”

Roger Christie said, “I want people to know that the Peaceful Sky law we voted successfully for in 2008 is still on the books!  It’s in the Hawaii County Code listed as Ordinance 08-181, the “Lowest Law Enforcement Priority of Cannabis Ordinance.   It says that no funds can be spent to investigate, arrest, or prosecute the cultivation of 24 cannabis plants, or less in private, at home by adults. It is a misdemeanor, known in Hawai’i law for decades as a “personal use” amount.  It was voided by the Hawaii Supreme Court by a 3 to 2 vote but remains on the books here for some almost miraculous reason.  However, growing 25 cannabis plants or more is a felony known for decades in law as a “Commercial use” amount with strict penalties.  Even starter sprouts can be counted. If there was a press release by the Mayor, Prosecutor, and County Council acknowledging the law we passed is still in effect, everyone’s backyard and sunny lanai could immediately be turned into a home health and profit center.  I call it “Ganja-nomics, Hawai’i’s safe and natural economic stimulus;  it’s the best and most obvious solution to uplift the economy here quickly and sustainably.  Know that I’m on the job working to obtain the right for all of us to grow or use cannabis hemp for its known/unknown uses. Thanks, everyone”.

Patty Kroh, the treasurer for Laulima Pahoa, the non-profit organization that promotes music and art charitable events, e.g., Maui Fire Recovery and Standing Rock is the co-director of the festival. The original idea came from the chairperson of Laulima Pahoa, Sara Steiner, who wanted to do an “All Things Cannabis” program starting in 2017. They also were instrumental in creating the “2nd Saturday in Pahoa” to stimulate economic recovery.

Patty Kroh said, “The intention and goal of the festival is to bring education to our community about what you can and cannot do regarding cannabis on the islands here to keep everybody informed about the laws which change often. We feature medical and legal experts with current information to keep everyone up to date. We think the important thing is to know the requirements of the legal system so you don’t get into trouble. The variety of alternative and western medical presentations is personally helpful for managing my pain level so I can  function without having to take toxic pharmaceuticals drugs.”

Empress Modupe, a Ganja War Veteran, founder of Balm of Gilead also known as Balm O.G. 360 LLC. A Cannabis Health and Wellness Ministry.

Empress is an activist, artist, educator, and Farmher, with over 40 years of experience advocating for criminal justice and cannabis reform  legislation. She seeks to decriminalize and legalize cannabis, addressing reparatory and restorative justice. “We provide cannabis literacy through activism, advocacy, and education with health and wellness coaching. We are passionate about individuals and communities taking a leap of faith in the use of cannabis medicine and plant-based nutrition. We are producers and processors of environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural products to advocate, empower, inspire, and promote health and wellness in nutrition. We support local farmers, using organic practice in cultivation. We also offer DIY courses for clients who want to learn our recipes, and skills in food processing/ preparation/ preservation, combining nutrition plant-based medicine.  We have very strong ties to family and community, being of service is part of our cultural & spiritual way of life as RASTAFARI!.”

“Empress ‘s goals are to transform the so-called “Legal Cannabis Industry” into a more just, environmentally and economically sustainable industry when it becomes legal both on the Federal & State levels. Medical cannabis has been legal in Hawaiʻi since 2000. The Ganja War Veterans are survivors of Green Harvest, Hawaiiʻs War on Drugs. They are actively engaging policymakers, cannabis industry stakeholders, medical cannabis patients, recreational users, as well as those who are looking to benefit financially from this plant.

The Ganja War Veterans of Hawaii need the people to guide legislators in creating laws that will:

  • ensure the words diversity, equity and inclusion are well defined in the legislation. In words and deeds. Reduce the rate of recidivism in the criminal justice system. Hawaii needs more access to land/housing/economic opportunities.
  • for the legislature to create cannabis laws providing educational opportunities for the economically challenged.
  • The cannabis laws must come with criminal justice reforms that decriminalize the plant, and its cultivation/possession. Expunging all past cannabis offenses and convictions.
  • Ensure the legislation addresses reparatory and restorative justice measures for individuals and communities worst impacted by prohibition.

Dr. Laurence Badgley,  Medical Cannabis Certification, author of research papers on the use of Medicinal Cannabis.

Dr. Badgley, author of “Healing Aids Naturally” and “Energy Medicine”, has been practicing general medicine for over  56 years, 6 years in Hawaii, having issued 329 cannabis certificates to date. He genuinely understands the medical benefits of using cannabis.
He said, “When you come to see me, you fill out an application. The state requires that you must fulfill one of their 12 different medical conditions, i.e., the most common diagnosis is anxiety, chronic pain, or P.T.S.D. You must be a resident of Hawaii and have a place to receive mail. Then you are eligible for a 329 certificate from me. My fee is based on a sliding scale depending on your income”. He offers practical advice by saying, “Do not use cannabis that is extracted with butane because it causes cancer. Do not use cannabis that has been grown or sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. The strongest pain medicine is legal hashish. The only thing stronger is full extract cannabis oil FECO which is 70% to 80% THC, which you can buy at the dispensary with a medical cannabis certificate. Be careful when you first start this medicine by taking a lemon seed size dosage to build up tolerance. It takes away pain for 24 hours. “My motto is, use what works, it’s hard to go wrong, go low, go slow and nobody dies.”
He further adds, “The latest prestigious medical and pharmaceutical journals state that various forms of CBD help to release reliance on other stimulants and manage addictive behavior for people who take unregulated drugs. Cannabis users have a lowered risk of dementia, cognitive decline, memory loss.”

Andrew, an avid promoter, speaker, volunteer,  and vendor for the “All Things Cannabis” has helped for many years to support the festival. His early experience with cannabis was as a young teenager of 15 with ADHD, when he noticed that it was helping him with his ability to stay focused. Thus began his long association with this plant medicine to heal himself and others with his knowledge and research into plant matchmaking.

Dea and Rocky, the lovesome/ twosome singing original songs/music.

Rocky and Dea met in 2018, when he was going to help her evacuate the animals on her farm in Kapoho during the lava flow. When he finally got to the farm, he never left. Subsequently, their lives had intertwined during the protest on Mauna Kea. They started writing songs together, “Living on Puna Time,” the original song they opened with. He writes a lot of earthy songs that they perform together in their winsome, lovesome, and twosome way. Rocky sings vocals, plays guitar and ukelele/harmonica and Dea sings vocals and plays a drum and percussion. “Living on Puna time” was performed at festival.  https://www.facebook.com/dea.rackley/videos/293448003663094/

Here are the lyrics to the other song Rocky & Dea performed at festival.

We Got Stoned and We missed it!

Got stoned and watched it roll on by.
We Got Stoned and We missed it
And we got real High.
We were heading to Kalapana to Kanikapila on 4/20.
We pulled on ova to roll a fatty and watch the waves roll in.
We joined Auntie Emily passing her bong near  Star Sanctuary.
We watched a Lele fly in and out jumped our Star cuz.
We got stoned and We missed it.
We got stoned and we watched it roll right by.
We got stoned and got real high.
We passed the bong to Star Uncle and he took a big galactic hit. He turned every color of the rainbow and Aunties bong burst into flames!
We got stoned and we missed that ole bong.
We got stoned and we missed it
We got stoned and We All got so High.

Saddle Road and Grand Slam Bands from Big Island performed at “All Things Cannabis Hemp Festival”, A dynamic ending with  2 fantastic Rock ‘n Roll Bands playing Oldie but Goodies music to soothe the ”Ancient Hippie’s Soul!

As the writer of this article and a participant/advocate for the “pono use of cannabis”, I want to acknowledge the medical doctors, patients, growers, dispensaries, and legislators who talked about the benefits of cannabis of the “All Things Cannabis Hemp Festiva!”  Most everyone was articulate, knowledgeable and passionate in their presentations. However, I personally know people who have become addicted to ganja with the unfortunate results of any addictive behavior, mainly dysfunction and disruption in their life and family, including negative health results. Everyone needs to be accountable in their choices and know when a substance is their “pono” medicine in order to make informed healthy decisions that support their well being and the well being of the planet!

These acknowledgements are listed by the producers in gratitude for the supporters of the “All Things Cannabis Festival.”
