A Season to Reckon with the Past
There are many things about October that give cause for review. The current state of things may be obvious from your present perspective: some choices may have missed the mark on taking care of the outcomes to avoid loss or disappointment.
If you grow things, the cycles of reap and sow are the analogy for many types of current situations. Looking ahead and planning for the future is natural to many business models. Infrastructure on an Island is certainly a focus for long-range planning of roads and water management. Can the engineers, accountants, and multi-department agencies have a wise vision for dealing with massive storms such as those that have been assaulting all coastal areas everywhere, not just Hawaii? Add a very live, active volcano, and the Big Island is a special case.
The last week of September had an emphasis on the outer planets in Air, emphasized with the Sun’s ingress into Libra and forming a Grand Trine in Air signs, with the Sun opposing Neptune (Oceans) in Aries as the Midpoint to the power planets Pluto (great force) and Uranus (electrification, lightning). We watched a monster hurricane hover near South Point for a couple of days. A grand trine aspect is a closed circuit of energy, with no outlet. And the Moon was in Pisces, so we got a lot of extra water and wind. Fortunately, we can see the fire element of Neptune in Aries as the warm air coming into the weather system to weaken it and move it on.
Mars was in the last degrees of Cancer, also contributing to the erratic travel of the storm. It enters Leo on October 1. Mars will quickly square Mercury in Mars’ water sign, Scorpio. Careful in your communications. This can show people having a short fuse to misunderstandings and eruptions of arguments. Mercury in Scorpio has a long memory and likes to bring up old issues.
The Moon in Gemini, though, is happy to change the subject, ask a lot of questions, and totally lighten the mood. It can make you forget what you were focused on. The Sun in early Libra will try to balance temperament with positive vibes.
Venus, planet of love, money, and beauty, is stationing retrograde on October 3rd. Venus has been traveling in the night sky and has reached the turning point to the Sun, where she becomes invisible for 40 days. Venus is making the conjunction to the Sun while between the Earth and the Sun on Oct. 23. The Sun will enter 0 Scorpio and Venus will enter 29 Libra the next day. Venus stations direct on November 14, at 22 Libra.
Mercury and Venus are synced in their cycles as they were last March. Mercury has a shorter cycle. It will station retrograde on Oct 24 at 20 Scorpio. It turns direct on November 13 at 5 Scorpio.

The New Moon on October 10th at 17 Libra opposes Saturn at 10 Aries, and the asteroid Pallas Athene, who offers strategic counsel and protects the weaker citizens. Also, the asteroid Vesta protects the sacred flame of home and hearth, and temple. The emphasis is on relationships and commitment to honor Women’s rights and the protection of children and home. The chart also has the asteroid Ceres in Cancer at the top of the chart, calling attention to the needs of food security through trade and agriculture for the Island community.
This month offers an opportunity for community discussions about resources and a review of safe travel routes and the infrastructure updates generally around the Island. As Mercury in Scorpio is diligent at investigating what has occurred, there is a need for changes and revisions to community roads and water management as a result of recent weather events. Retrograde planets are appropriate for review and reorganization. Venus in Scorpio will look at the financial aspect of the cost factors, as well as the basic safety and future needs to sustain rural communities.
Mars moving into Leo is going to bring up some stubborn attitudes by some in leadership who may clash with power figures at the higher levels of State and County authority. Pluto in Aquarius is very slow-moving and has a long-range plan of redevelopment centered in the area of the new moon chart that represents home and property. Pluto stations direct on October 16.
Perhaps the issues need the support and guidance of elders and those knowledgeable of the culture and history of the areas that need the greatest attention. Pluto is the planet of transformation and deep personal changes. It seems to represent Pele, Goddess of the Volcano.

By the end of the month, the Full Moon is at 2 Taurus opposed the Sun at 2 Scorpio, in a hard square to Pluto at the top of the chart, with asteroid Juno, who challenges the honoring of our commitments and partnerships. Pluto has the power to bring things up from the deep and expose the hidden and suppressed. Things can blow up big. This is a touchy time for conflicts.
Venus at 29 Libra Rx, and Mercury at 20 Scorpio, are becoming visible in the night sky. Mercury brings a message as it leaves the Sun’s beams. It is square to Jupiter, a benefic planet, trapped between malefic Mars and the South Node of the Moon, the point of release and expulsion. Mars is temperamental in the Sun’s Fire sign. Egos make big Drama at this time. Jupiter magnifies the energy around it.
Venus is considered a prisoner of the underworld. It rules Taurus and Libra. Venus issues will be at the top of everything. Venus is directly opposed to Chiron, the wounded healer, and Eris, a dwarf planet whose battle cry is “Justice!”
Because this can be a dramatic period of public upset, on the personal level, it may be a time of changing our perception of what is true in the face of exposure of perhaps damaging information that can change careers.
The Midterm Election is days away. But with Mercury and Venus both retrograde, don’t be surprised if the Election results take time to be fully determined. Mars will activate the degree of the last Solar Eclipse, 20 Leo, on November 5, which could bring out something explosive.
These are changeable times that reflect things done in the past. Nothing will stay the same. The old “normal” is gone forever.
Mars enters Virgo on Thanksgiving Day. Virgo looks at details and refines the bottom line of acceptable. Mars is the planet of self-will, drive, and personal action. In the Mundane worldview, it encompasses War and strategies for Peace.
Virgo analyzes, organizes, develops systems and agencies. Mars will spend from November 28 through February 22 in Virgo. It retrogrades January 10, at 10 Virgo, and stations direct on April 2 at 20 Leo. It again activates the August Solar Eclipse degree. This is a potent period of review, reordering of actions, commitment, and future intentions.
