Mick Kalber: 2022 Mauna Loa Erupts

I moved to the Big Island in 1984, the month Mauna Loa began to erupt. I was burned out on doing tv, had been working 60-80 hour work weeks in Denver. But when Kilauea erupted at the same time, I knew I had to get some gear and began documenting Kilauea’s remarkable eruptions for almost the next four decades.

I wasn’t sure if Mauna Loa would ever come back to life during my lifetime, but on Sunday, November 27th, she did and wow, what a spectacle! Having covered the epic 2018 eruption in lower Puna, I was prepared for huge eruptions, but this one was even bigger than imagined! I was amazed and humbled at the Volcano Goddess, Pele’s power and beauty. I am honored to be in her presence and encourage everyone to see the goddess in action, she’s spectacular! And accessible on the ground on the Saddle Road, or in the air, my tour of choice. The glow can be seen over most of the island it’s awesome! You’ll be glad you did.
