From the moment I drove onto the Puamana Farm, I knew I was in the enchanted fantasy land of the 1960s, “It’s never too late to be a Hippie!” I quipped to myself. I was greeted by Stefani, a vocalist in Peace Tribe and one of the land stewards in her rainbow tie-dyed dress and socks. I had a deja vu of my past life living in Haight-Ashbury, while visions of the colorful dress of the 60s flashed in front of my eyes!
The original land steward and founder of Paumana Music Farm, Jaris Dreaming, aka John Fattorosi was inspired to start Puamana in 2003. He wanted an alternative way of cohabitating, living communally rather than living in separate little boxes next to each other. Jaris, who has lived in many different communities seeks the communal lifestyle, and his real vision was to start a healing and creative art center here. He envisions live music events, an active Yoga studio, a market on the highway, and the development of a hot water spa with solar and wood heating. He just cleared land for a huge outdoor dance floor and local live music events to support local musicians and outside promoters. He welcomes financial donations to support the operating expenses of Puamana Music Farm. His last album, “Breaking the Spell” is available on Amazon or iTunes. When I first arrived on Saturday afternoon, Stuheart & the Trueheart Band sang a song about rainbows, “Heart of the Rainbows,” so fitting for the rainy/sunny afternoon. Stuheart’s Music combined roots reggae soul with heart song lyrics. He was inspired by Hawai’i’s laid-back lifestyle and surrounding beauty. He composed many songs… “Best yet, Big I Never Sleeps, True Changes, Reggae on the Rock, Heart of the Rainbow”. His other passion is tending to Mango Orchards for 23 years and singing praise for the Āina.
Kazumé, the real deal Hawaiian-grown girl sang of her beloved childhood home in Oahu, while Kaneohe played the ukelele. She writes original island music and songs from the heart. This set was supportive of feminine ideals by empowering women.
Unity and the Band of Angels starring Unity on her African kora who blended world tribal beat with her Vietnamese origins. This global music band offered luscious vocal harmonies, African kora, and drums, with our ancestral influences of Asian, Latin, and beyond. Music was a powerful healing force!
We all can dance with Unity and her drummer, Maurizio, in an African dance and drum workshop every Thursday evening from 5 to 8 pm at Puamana goddess temple. On Tuesday evening, Maurizio teaches Afro-Cuban drumming rhythms from 5 to 7 pm also at Puamana goddess temple. Dr. Unity Nguyen is an integrative physician, with an MD from UCSF and 20+ years experience in acupuncture and herbs. In private practice, she specializes in sports high performance, longevity, and resolving tough chronic conditions. She offers insurance-based primary care in Pahoa.
Fantuzzi is a world troubador with the Flexible Band that inspired everyone to start moving onto the natural dance floor with his familiar, Mystic Latin Salsa, Afro Funk, Reggae, and World Beat Sounds. His original songs of love/ peace and devotional chants are his trademarks. “Stand up for your rights,” in his favorite reggae style, unified everyone in the song. He followed with, “Shiva, Shiva, Shambo”, one of his devotional chants that invites call-and-response audience participation.
Last but not least, Peace Tribe with Jaris Dreaming is a world music tribal band with his original songs and socially conscious lyrics that created uplifting dance beats. A “musician’s musician,” Jaris plays guitar (upside down and backward), bass, keyboards, drums, and percussion, in addition to singing, writing, and arranging music, producing festivals, and engineering the sound. Hawaii’s Jaris Dreaming, with a strong voice and high tenor range, has been performing since 1964 touring tirelessly to bring a message of peace. The music of Peace Tribe is guaranteed to move you onto your feet with the dance rhythms. His musical genres include Rock, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Reggae, Blues, Latin, African, and New Age.
This music opens your heart and fills your soul with positivity as you dance to the wonderful sounds of these Rainbow Gathering legends. A magic spell was created by listening to these messages of love, harmony, and beauty. This music touches upon visions of another realm. I began to visualize and viscerally experience a world bathed in peace, joy, and beneficence activated by the politically awakened lyrics. Here is a world where everyone is connected, living their higher purpose, and serving the environment with consciousness and sustainability!
The lyrics to Jaris’s song below, best epitomizes his view of the utopian world he creates with his music!
I BELIEVE by Jaris Dreaming
I believe in love
I believe in peace
I believe we’ll get there eventually
Love takes its time
But sooner or laterI know we’re going to wake up
To love,
I believe
I believe
I believe in you
I believe in me
I believe we both
Feel the same down deep
Love takes its time
But sooner or later
I know we’re going to wake up
To love,
I believe
I believe
(BRIDGE)
I believe in a vision
Of our world in peace
No separation, no wars to fight
The fighting would cease
How many dare to share this dream
In what do we believe
I believe in love
I believe in peace
I believe we’ll get there eventually
Love takes its time
But sooner or later
I know we’re going to wake up
To love, I believe
I believe
I believe
I believe
