Aloha, and welcome to our halau hula (hula school)!

Here, you can learn about the Hawaiian hula dance and find out what our halau has been up to.

Our halau, Halau Hula Ka Makani Hali ‘Ala O Puna (“The Returning Fragrant Wind of Puna”) has been taking part locally in Hawaiian cultural ceremonies and sacred rituals for over 20 years. Our mission is to support and encourage the growth and perpetuation of traditional Hawaiian culture through Pono (Hawaiian protocol), pa’a (strong/secure/right) education in Hula (Hawaiian Dance), na Oli (Hawaiian Chants), and in the participation in ancient ceremonies and rituals.

Kumu Ehulani has lead the non-competitive halau hula (Hawaiian dance school) Halau Hula Ka Makani Hali ‘Ala O Puna (The Returning Fragrant Wind of Puna) for 32 years in Puna. She has also taught hula and Hawaiian culture at many schools in Puna. Her passion has been the perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture through hula, chants, language, blessings, cleansings, healings, ceremonies, spiritual guidance, and cultural events. She is also involved in helping to restore ancient Hawaiian na heiau (temples), traveling and sharing the aloha spirit, teaching deep insight of Hawaiian culture, history and spirituality, including her knowledge of sacred sites. She is currently putting up a traditional halau building on the property next to her home and has put many hours into sanding ohiʻa logs and doing hands-on work along with halau members.
