hydroponic hut interview

Allyson and Allen Blackard lived on Oahu for twelve years before moving to the mainland and travelling in an RV. They loved the You Pick farms and orchards and when they moved back to the Big Island in 2020, Allyson studied agriculture at HCC where she was introduced to hydroponic farming. Inspired to create a way to help alleviate food insecurity on the island, they opened Hydroponic Hut, where in addition to having a 24 hour self-serve produce stand, they teach classes to encourage others to farm hydroponically. They see their mission in three parts: First to grow high quality greens at an inexpensive price for Hawaii residents, second to educate the community and encourage them to grow this produce for themselves, their family and their community; and third is to turn Hydroponic Hut into a non-profit that supports others in learning to grow their own food.
